ABSTRACT: The Significance of Studying the Slope Breaks in Jurassic Large-type Down-warped Lake Basins, Junggar, China

The slope breaks are widely distributed in Jurassic large down-warped lake basin, Junggar Basin, West China. They can be grouped under four genetic types, which include fracture slope break, bending slope break, sedimentary slope break and erodent slope break. For their multi-grades characteristics along source area direction, they also can be classified as basin margin slope break and inner-basin slope break according to their natural geographical positions. The genesis mechanism of the slope breaks mainly consists of deep-seated thrust structure, inherited paleohigh and interior basin secondary fault etc., and the scale of slope breaks closely related to the size and the period of tectogenesis. Because of the diversity of tectonic activity, the slope breaks are characterized by multi-period, episode, differential motion, inherited and invert in different period and district.
Considerable researches indicate that the stratigraphic overlap, the longitudinal lithologic combination and the longitudinal and lateral distribution of depositional systems are obviously controlled by the slope breaks. Upon all of these analyses, a reasonable pattern that the slope breaks control the atectonic traps has been established and used it to guide the exploration in Junggar Basin.
