ABSTRACT: Geochemical Correlation of Hydrocarbons in the Western Niger Delta, Nigeria

Sixty-six oils from eleven offshore, transitional marine, and onshore fields in the Western Niger Delta, Nigeria, were analysed for biomarker composition using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Bulk parameters (e.g. API gravity and 13C isotope) were also measured. Isotopic composition of the oils indicated that they were derived from multiple source facies containing varying mixes of marine and terrigenous organic matter. On the basis of biomarker distribution in the oils, and evidence from the oils isotopic signatures, three oil families were identified in the Western Niger Delta study area.
