ABSTRACT: Geological settings and petroleum potential of the marine sequence in south China

Ma, Yongsheng, Gansheng Li , Oilfield Administration Sinopec, Bejing, China

Marine sequence was well developed in south China, which can be divided into two super-sequences and seven mega-sequences from Sinian to Triassic. The platform involved complicated tectonic evolution stages, including passive margin (610--408Ma),oceanic crust subduction (408--245Ma),continental crust collision (245--97Ma) and foreland basin (97--23Ma). They are well-matched in time when source rock developed and the initial transgressive stage of every mega-sequence. The main source formation, including low Cambrian, low Silurian and Permian, are approximately corresponded to their condensed sections and transgressive tract. Upper paleozoic reef and grain type carbonate reservoir, and upper Sinian and low Paleozoic good dolomite reservoir well developed in most part of the platform. Mesozoic and Tertiary mudstone and evaporate-bearing mudstone are high-quality cap rock in Chuxiong basin. Paleozoic mudstone and Mesozoic evaporate-bearing mudstone are widely distributed in the other part of the platform. With total of 2.09 million km2 exploration area ,the main exploration targets are Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian and Triassic. The potential petroleum resources of its eight blocks reaches up to 91.51 billion tons, 73% of the resources are nature gas.
