Abstract: 3D Regional Stratigraphic Modelling of the Middle Jurassic Brent Group, North Sea

The Middle Jurassic Brent Group sediments are the most important hydrocarbon reservoirs in North West Europe.These reservoirs were deposited in fluvial and shoreface environments. A regional depositional model was developed using highresolution sequence stratigraphy analysis of 150 wells, and timing of the movement of active faults was quantified in a new structural model.A number of different correlations was possible due to the lack of data in the southern part of the basin, and to the intra-Brent and Base Cretaceous erosions.

Stratigraphical modelling was performed using DIONISOS to reduce uncertainties and to improve iteratively the depositional model. DIONISOS is a three dimensional stratigraphic model developed in IFP and based on a 31), water driven diffusion approach, which allows to simulate erosion, transport and sedimentation processes of siliciclastic and carbonate deposits in continental to shallow marine environments. Applied on the Brent Group, stratigraphical modelling helped geologists to test different geological and structural scenarios, quantifying influence of sediment source location and intensities, eustatic variations and tectonic movements, on depositional environments and basin-in-fill stratigraphy. This regional simulation (200 x 300 km2 ) was linked to local reservoir simulations (20 x 20 km 2 ) to better model reservoir location, geometry and heterogeneities.

The link between geological modelling, and regional and local stratigraphical simulations led to a better understanding and characterization of the Brent Group.
