Abstract: Reservoir Characterization and Performance of the Upper Cretaceous Frontier Formation in the Green River and Wind River Basins of Wyoming

The Upper Cretaceous Frontier Formation is a significant producer in many of the Rocky Mountain basins. Cumulative Frontier production from the Green River and Wind River Basins totals 3.1+ TCF of gas and 20+ million barrels of oil.

The Frontier Sandstone within the Wind River and Green River Basins have been evaluated based upon their open hole well log responses. Approximately 16% of the total Frontier well (property) population within the Green River and Wind River Basins have been characterized. A consistent variety of parameters have been calculated and recorded in a digital format for ease of statistical analysis. These data are used to reveal general tendencies and discrepancies in the performance of these prolific reservoirs.

Reservoir characteristics of the Frontier will be presented showing the trends in thickness, porosity, water saturation, depth, temperature, and production using approximately 374 wells within 31 fields throughout the two basins.

Indications are that the Frontier sandstone reservoirs are incompletely drained with the current average well spacing. Increased density in presently producing areas could increase ultimate recoveries many times over what will be recovered with the present well density.

A field example will be given that demonstrates the validity of the conclusions reached in this reservoir characterization.
