Abstract: The Permo-Triassic Evolution Of The Northern Margin Of The NE German Basin - Constraints From Cross Section Balancing

The Northeast German Basin is one of a series of related intracontinental basins extending from the North Sea to Poland. The basin has been the target of extensive hydrocarbon exploration since the 1960's. New deep seismic profiles (DEKORP-BASIN' 96) together with industry seismics provide the opportunity to improve our understanding of the evolution of this basin. Of special interest in this work is the distribution of Permian and Mesozoic/Cenozoic sediments.

Block faulting in the Late Stephanian was accompanied by extensive magmatism resulting in the deposition of a thick volcanic succession of Permo-silesian age. Following marine transgression an epicontinental southward migrating sea developed in Zechstein times. The overlying Triassic succession is characterized by the Germanic tripartite facies comprising Lower Triassic fluviatile-dominated red-bed clastic sequences (Buntsandstein), followed by Middle Triassic marine platform carbonates (Muschelkalk) an Upper Triassic (Keuper) continental-type sediments. Upper Triassic salt movement resulted in the formation of a series of minibasins which subsided through the Zechstein salt to unconformably rest on the pre-Zechstein. In the Jurassic and Cretaceous, regional compression caused uplift of parts of the basin. A final subsidence phase occured in the Cenozoic and was accompanied by renewed salt movement.

Selected seismic reflectors were interpreted and correlated throughout the region. In combination with deep boreholes, a 3D model was developed. The restoration of this model, using a series of detailed timeslices, provided new insights into the evolution of the region.
