Abstract: Sensitivity Maps 1:25,000 Scale of Punta Pescador Exploratory Block as a Tool for Oil Spill Contingency Response

Schiazza Jose la, Alexis Rojas and Jorge Rodriguez-Grau - Amoco Venezuela Petroleum Company

Preparation of Oil Spill Contingency Plans usually involves thorough planning which should include the development of sensitivity maps at a reasonably detailed scale level. With this in mind, Amoco Venezuela is putting together a series of sensitivity maps for a very pristine area of Punta Pescador at the northeastern part of the Orinoco Delta (Venezuela), concentrating on exploratory efforts. Maps are being developed at a 1:25,000 scale, incorporating physical, biological and socio- economic information, integrated into a Geographical Information System (GIS) and simulation capabilities in the event of an oil spill. Herein, an overview of the work is presented, which will demonstrate the usefulness of such powerful tools in rather harsh and sensitive environments. Implementation of such Contingency Plans is essential for our future activities, as we are well aware of the Company's responsibilities for the well being of the uniqueness of the area assigned for its future sustainable development.
