Abstract: Increasing Coal Natural Fracture Permeability in the San Juan Basin Fruitland Formation

MAVOR, MATTHEW J., Tesseract Corporation, JACK E. VAUGHN, EnerVest San Juan Operating LLC

Summary

Repeated well tests in the Valencia Canyon area of the San Juan Basin Fruitland Formation have shown that the natural fracture absolute permeability has greatly increased with continued production. This conclusion is very significant as the deliverability of natural gas has increased although the reservoir pressure has been substantially depleted. We expect gas recovery to be greater than would have been economically possible without this phenomenon. Another benefit is that increasing permeability has overcome formation damage caused by cased-fractured completions.
