Abstract: Revised Paleogeography of the Mesoproterozoic Belt Supergroup

LINK, PAUL KARL, Department of Geology, Idaho State University, Pocatello, Idaho 83209 ([email protected]), WINSTON, DON, Geology Department, University of Montana, Missoula MT 59812, and HATHAWAY, NATE, P.O. Box 81, Arlee, MT 59821

Summary

Recent geochronologic and stratigraphic work in east-central Idaho suggests revised correlations and paleogeographic synthesis for the Lemhi Group and Yellowjacket Formation within the inclusive Belt Supergroup. Rocks mapped as Yellowjacket Formation represent several stratigraphic intervals and depositional locations within a basin that experienced normal faulting during deposition of the Middle Belt Carbonate. Previous concepts of Belt Island and the Medicine Lodge thrust plate are untenable.
