Abstract: Fluid Flow Events to Constrain Hydrocarbon Charge Evolution in the Papuan Basin

Summary

Data will be presented to show that Jurassic and Cretaceous reservoirs in the Papuan Basin over a strike distance of 300 km received oil charge at the same time. Four hydrocarbon charge events (H1 to H4) and two formation water flow events (W1 & W2) can be recognised. Regional oil charge (H3) was preceded by a localised gas charge event (H1), a regional hypersaline brine flow event (W1) and a second gas charge event (H2). regional oil charge (H3) was a regional meteoric water flow event (W2). Finally, in the northwest Foldbelt there was a large gas charge event (H4). Water flowing at the time of oil charge may represent dilution of W1 brine by W2 meteoric water or dispersion in diagenetically evolved pore waters.
