Abstract: Coupling of Along-Fault Migration and Hydrocarbon Entrapment in Stacked Reservoirs

HUANG, JIE and PAUL J. HICKS JR., Exxon Production Research Co.; JAMES P. ASHBAUSH and PETER B. FLEMINGS, Pennsylvania State University

Summary

Along-fault hydrocarbon migration is simulated using a commercial reservoir simulator. The concept of hydrocarbon bypass in anisotropic heterogeneous fault zones is examined through systematic variation of permeability and capillary controls.

Incorporation of conceptual learnings from numerical simulation of hydrocarbon flow along faults into quantitative hydrocarbon system analysis provides an integrated model to evaluate the impact of fault permeability and capillary property structure to hydrocarbon charge and column height distributions in fault-dependent traps adjacent to the fault pathway.
