Abstract: Depositional Sequences and the Stratigraphic Distribution of Fossils: Isolating the Effects of Condensation

HOLLAND, STEVEN M., University of Georgia; MARK E. PATZKOWSKY, Pennsylvania State University

Summary

Previous numerical models have indicated the importance of sequence stratigraphic architecture on the assembly of the fossil record, in particular, its effects on the stratigraphic distribution of first and last occurrences in outcrop and core. Preliminary modeling demonstrates here the effects of stratigraphic condensation in amplifying artifacts produced by unconformities, facies control, and sampling intensity and in generating additional artifacts. Most notably, stratigraphic condensation can generate clusters of first and last occurrences in intervals of stratigraphic condensation, such as maximum flooding surface and parasequence boundaries.
