Abstract: Petro - Facies Analysis of the Bakken Formation in SE Saskatchewan

FERDOUS, HASAN S., and ROBIN W. RENANT, University of Saskatchewan, Canada

Summary

The Devonian - Mississippian siliciclastic Bakken Formation is present between two carbonate units in SE Saskatchewan. The middle Bakken silty sandstone member separates the two black shales of this formation. Two distinct fining-upward sequences exist in the middle Bakken unit. Detailed core analysis, petrography and petrophysical investigation reveal the Bakken petro-facies distribution in SE Saskatchewan. The 1m thick petro-facies 1d is the main reservoir unit in the Bakken Formation and records a Feldspathic-Dolomitic Quartz. Sub-Arenite type reservoir facies. It has a mean q of 10% and K of 4.2 md, the median pore-throat diameter is 14 µm and mercury capillary-pressure curves have smooth to intermediate concave shapes. The unit is mainly characterized by ~50 µm macro-dolomites of partially dissolved subhedral nature.
