Abstract: Sequence Stratigraphic Analysis and Development of Lower Devonian Reservoirs in the Central Ahnet Basin - Algeria

MAHSAS-KHEBIZI, FATMA ZOHRA

Central Ahnet Basin is a major gas producing area in the southwestern Saharan platform. Lower Devonian form important reservoirs along with the Ordovician and Tournaisian sandstones. Not all the well drilled in this area proved successful; some of them have tested water or dry.

This presentation deals with the sequence analysis and its application for a successful Devonian succession. Lower Devonian exploration based mainly on core studies, well log correlation and system tract analysis. The lower Devonian is subdivided into two sequences corresponding to the Gedinnian and Siegenian - Emsian in a ramp basin setting. The first Gedinnian sequence is represented by marginal-marine and shelf, and the second Siegenian and Emsian by fluvial, littoral and offshore deposits. In each sequence lowstand system tract, transgressive system tract and highstand system tract deposits may be identified with their bounding surfaces. Sequence stratigraphic analysis of well logs demonstrated that reservoirs are represented by lowstand, transgressive and highstand system tract succession.

The success in exploration wells may primarily depend upon finding the reservoir developed in the Gedinnian lowstand.
