Abstract: The Advanced Wells Project - THERMIE Project OG/00057/95

JOHANSEN, T., and R. ROLFSEN

The objective of the AWP is to demonstrate and bring to maturity new technologies for more cost effective exploration, development and production of hydrocarbon resources. More specifically, the project focuses on new and modified technologies for improved drilling, completion, operation and evaluation of advanced wells. By promoting such technologies in a joint industry project with key end-users and innovative suppliers, the aim is to reduce economical risk and uncertainty related to operational safety and technical performance.

The main areas from which technologies related to drilling and completion of advanced wells will be selected for demonstration within the AWP are the following: Hard Rock Drilling, Near Bit Sensors, Drillstring Dynamics, Cuttings Transport, Window Milling, Rotary Steerable Drilling and Completion Design.

The project also aims to improve evaluation and prediction of advanced wells performance through development of new features in existing tools for numerical simulation of reservoir flow, flow through completions and flow in wells. These improved tools will also be integrated to enable simultaneous simulation of the entire fluid flow process from reservoir to surface.

In this paper the results achieved so far in the Advanced Wells Project are presented. The oil companies participating in the AWP are: Agip S.p.A., Amoco (U.K.) Exploration Company, British Petroleum Exploration Company Limited (BPX), Norsk Hydro ASA, Phillips Petroleum Company Norway, Saga Petroleum A.S.A., Den norske stats oljeselskap a.s, (Statoil) and TOTAL Norge A.S.
