Abstract: Types and Distribution of Stratigraphic Plays in Post-Trappean Sequence of Bengal Basin, India

DAS SRIBATSA, KUMAR, and BAG SUBRATO

Exploration for hydrocarbons during last fifty years in the Indian part of Bengal Basin has negated the presence of major structural traps in the Post-trappean sediment. Hence, thrust of exploration in this basin requires to be directed towards possible stratigraphic plays. All geoscientific data of Bengal Basin (onshore) have been analyzed using the sequence stratigraphic concepts to identify the prospective stratigraphic plays.

The effects of variable paleolatitudinal position of the Indian Plate and relative sea-level change in post trappean sequence have been imprinted in the sediments of Bengal Basin. The study reveals various types of stratigraphic plays and their distribution in time and space. The highstand deposits of different sequences, unconformity related traps, channel fill sediments, turbidites, late lowstand deposits and early transgressive sand bodies close to the shelf-slope break are the targets for future exploration. Eocone carbonate build-ups would be additional exploration objective.
