An Integrated Study for Identification and Evaluation of Environmental Impacts at QadirPur Gas Field

RAFIQUE, MUHAMMAD TAHIR, and RASHID JAMIL CHAUHAN

An Integrated Environmental study was carried out for QadirPur Gas Field Development Project, which is located about 10 km north of Ghotki, Sind Province of Pakistan. The main objectives of the project were to identify and analyze major environmental impacts, and recommend alternatives as well as mitigation measures to minimize these impacts. Field investigations were undertaken comprising collection of data, prediction of Impacts, evaluation of preventives, comparison of alternatives, mitigatory and compensatory measures and framing of recommendations. This monitoring program provided information about physiochemical, hydrochemical changes caused by spill of hydrocarbons, brines, acid water seepage, and their Impact on air quality and surrounding biophysical resources. To minimize these impacts Environmental Control System (ECS) was developed for monitoring and modeling of air quality, surface and groundwater contamination and solid waste. Finally it is concluded that a network should be installed to detect surface and groundwater contamination and air quality. Waste water should be used for irrigation after treatment, metallic waste incorporate for recycle. Compensatory measure should be taken for upgradition of process and storage ponds. A combination of radiographic, ultrasonic and electromagnetic surveys be used to monitor condition of gas gathering system and pipelines. Dry ice plant should be used for better use of Carbon dioxide.
