Microfacies Analysis and Its Application in the Early-Stage Reservoir Description, Donghe Oil Field

LI, SONG-QUAN

The cost for exploration and development is getting higher and higher, since oil and gas exploration in recent and coming years takes place mostly in the frontier regions, the geology of oil fields discovered are often complicated, and the pay zones are usually rather deep buried. In order to reliably understand reservoirs and reduce the number of evaluation wells as possible, the reservoir description should be started early. For this reason the reservoir description techniques during the early evaluation phase have become a hot topic in recent years.

Various new techniques have been introduced to get relatively reliable knowledge about the reservoir evaluation when a few wells' or only one well's data are available. Nevertheless, the reservoir sedimentology is the theoretical basis for the reservoir description and evaluation. In practicing the reservoir description of the Donghe oil field, such an approach was probed that the distribution scale of reservoir sand-bodies and shaly barriers could be semiquantitatively predicted in two steps. The first is to closely analyzing the sedimentary facies of reservoirs, and the second is the comparison with the mature geological models, through the analogues of the known geological knowledge of the same sedimentary environment. As a result, a basic uchitecture for building a conceptual model could be obtained and satisfactorily used for the reservoir evaluation.
