The use of the Internet for scientific research is uncontroversial and very interesting but can be- if the user doesn't know his way around - very time consuming and ineffective.

To bundle information for the 40 million people using the Internet daily, it can be a great help to know the addresses of existing page links. The addresses and the content of the most common and useful pages for the applying geologist will be presented. Page links for geological departments, universities, companies, geological software and other related topics will be discussed.

The most successful and commonly used online systems are: America Online (AOL), CompuServe and Microsoft Network. These systems have been investigated for the advantages and disadvantages for applying geologists in broad terms.

A brief introduction for the use of these systems and the efficient use of the Internet will be provided.
