Application of High-Resolution Sequence Stratigraphy to Fluvial Reservoir Analysis

DENG, HONGWEN, and HONGLIANG WANG

The Upper Tertiary Guantao Formation of Bohai Bay basin in China was deposited during the depression stage of the rifting basin. It is dominated by fluvial-flood plain facies with a large area.

Based on the principle of stratigraphic base level and the techniques of high-resolution chronostratigraphic correlation, this paper focus on establishing the stratigraphic framework of Upper Member of Guantao Formation, offshore area, Jiyang Depression, and predicting the facies distributions. Four intermediate-scale stratigraphic cycles which are the record of four complete intermediate-term base level cycles are identified in the light of detailed-analysis from well logs and cores. Facies succession motifs and the geologic origion of reservoir deposited during intermediate-scale cycles are interpreted. Seismic sequence stratigraphy analysis is obtained by converting stratigraphic interpretations from well logs into seismic reflection geometry and wave-form character based on seismogram synthesis. in result, each intermediate-scale cycle can correspond to specific seismic facies. The geologic connotation represented by seismic inflections in different intermediate-scale cycles and the different positions in the same cycle are varied due to the change of accommodation and sediment supply ratio (A/S).

The four intermediate-scale cycles can be traced and the lateral extent of facies and sandbody distribution have been delineated in studying area.
