Horizontal Well and Extended Reach Drilling Technology Activity with Operational Practice in North America and Europe

CROUSE, PHILIP C.

In 1994 and 1995, a study was undertaken to investigate the application of horizontal well technology and extended reach technologies in North America and Europe. Investigations found out that well over 11,000 horizontal wells have been drilled over the last decade with around 150 extended reach wells drilled.

Operators representing over 30% of all horizontal wells drilled and 80% of all extended reach wells were interviewed. Investigated were technology problem areas and company philosophies with these technologies. Drilling, completion, reservoir, and production/facility/equipment issues were covered in the interviews. The study has many findings and conclusions relating to the applications, problem areas, and strategies implemented by the broader industry. Over 25 operators representing international majors, majors, independents, and national oil companies were person-to-person interviewed.
