L. S. Pittman

When the Personal Computer became a reality in the early 1980's the cornerstone was laid for one of the greatest benefits to the independent/consultant which had occurred this century. Developments in computer hardware and software offer exciting capabilities in oil and gas data management at an attractive economic level.

Good data management procedures coupled with a good data manager is very important to successful exploration and exploitation projects. It has been said, "exploration power is derived from control of geological data. The greater the control, the faster, more detailed, diversified, efficient and productive can be the exploration effort."

The importance of Data Management and its impact on the efficiency of such day-today operations as prospect evaluation, prospect generation, field studies and computer generation of maps will be discussed. Simply stated, today's competition demands we work faster and smarter in the way we manage our data.
