Abstract: Evolution of Exploration on Lake Erie

Louis J. Goulet

In 1913, 82 years ago the first well was drilled in Lake Erie. The well was located 320 feet offshore in Romney Township in Kent County in Southern Ontario, Canada. Since that time some 1,756 wells have been drilled. Currently there are 602 wells producing in over 100,000 miles of underwater pipeline.

Technology has changed since 1913 from the wooden drilling towers 300 ft. from shore to our modern drillship named "Telesis" which can operate in any waters on Lake Erie. Diving, pipelining and completion technology have also taken giant leaps since 1913.

We are proud of our natural gas history in Ontario and will be pleased to share this with you. We have an excellent library of slides to support our presentation.
