Future Petroleum Potential of the United Kingdom Continental Shelf

John Brooks

The UK continues to be one of the most prospective areas in the world for exploration for oil and gas. The reasons for this are the many basins that exist on the shelf and the large diversity of plays within these basins.

Oil and/or gas have been discovered in rocks ranging from pre-Cambrian through to the Tertiary (Eocene) and after 30 years of exploration this still provides a variety of opportunities for the explorer.

A comparison is made between the estimated reserves found (and yet to find) in 1984 with those currently envisaged and the reasons for these increases.

The new plays not recognized in 1984 but now becoming commonplace are described and assessed as additions to the reserve base.

Future areas of potential will be discussed as will the UK Government's initiatives in terms of licensing rounds to access these regions.

The Environmental framework will be explained and how it may impact on exploration.
