Abstract: Geological Structures and Occurrence of Hydrocarbon in Sedimentary Basins on the Northern Continental Shelf of the South China Sea

Taijun Xie, Pan Zuying, Sun Yuxiao

The northern continental shelf of South China Sea consists of three hydrocarbon accumulation belts. These are divided by differences in type of petroleum source rocks, thermal maturity, thickness of sedimentary sequences, character of cap rocks, and structural traps. In general, the cratonic rift basins are oil-prone, the northern depressions of the continental margin basins and the intercontinental basins are rich both in oil and gas, and the southern depression of the continental margin basins and central depressions of the intercontinental basins are gas-prone.
