Abstract: The 3D Seismic Revolution: Impact on Development

E.O. Nestvold

The success of an exploration or production project hinges on a
knowledge of the subsurface. This is true whether we are locating an exploration well, or making a field development plan. An accurate seismic image of subsurface structure and lithology is a weapon in our armory against the risk of drilling an earth into which we cannot see. The tool for this is 3D seismic, and it has no peer.

We believe that 3D seismic is revolutionizing the geophysical industry with far-reaching effect on the exploration and production business worldwide. This belief is corrborated by a broad spectrum of the industry ranging from the giants to small independents. Although the details vary, the message is always the same, and always clear.

First of all, we note that 3D seismic surveys add reserves by enabling oil and gas to be found in "fairway" locations which might have been missed, and by finding supplementary accumulations around and below existing fields. 3D seismic imaging also contributes to enhancing the recovery from producing oil and gas fields. Thus even fields with declining production can be rejuvenated.

Secondly, drilling costs dominate both exploration and development expenditure. Wells are being saved with a better imaged subsurface and, consequently, significant downward movement of development costs is taking place.

We believe that 3D seismic technology is the key to the future, and that it will play an even more significant role in strategies for development, as well as for exploration, in the years to come.
