The Triassic succession in the Southern Alps is made up of continental deposits, carbonate platforms and basinal mixed sediments variously stacked and interfingered.

The good seismic-like exposure, which allows a clear definition of stratal patterns, the great quantity of ammonites and the disposal of a highly resolved ammonite standard scale for the Anisian-lower Carnian interval, have permitted the sequence stratigraphic interpretation of the Triassic in the Southern Alps.

The sequence stratigraphic interpretation has allowed a reliable scheme of correlations between shelf, basin and continental deposits.

Third-order sequence boundaries and maximum flooding surfaces in different environments, as well as second-order peak transgressions and maximum regressions, are shown in connection with the ammonite data which allow the biochronostratigraphic calibration.
