Abstract: A Comparison of The Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian between Northern Switzerland and the United Kingdom using Sequence Stratigraphy

The Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian (sensu gallico) of several sedimentologically and faunally contrasting regions are compared. The exposures in the Jura of Northern Switzerland (Sub-Mediterranean Province) are dominated by the development of a carbonate platform. In contrast, the sections in England from two intracratonic basins (Northwest European Province) comprise a complexity of shallow-marine siliciclastics and carbonates. In Scotland (edge of the Boreal province) siliciclastics were deposited in a deep basin with a fairly constant sediment supply. Each of the different regions was interpreted independently using the general principals of sequence stratigraphy and then the sections were compared. The sequence stratigraphical analysis was based on a large data set derived from facies analysis geochemistry biostratigraphy and recognition of different types of unconformity. The Early Oxfordian and lower Middle Oxfordian shows a second order regression and the third order sequence boundaries transgressive surfaces and maximum flooding surfaces are all found to be synchronous between each of the regions. From the upper part of the Middle Oxfordian into the Kimmeridgian the ammonites are provincial but the biostratigraphical information available for correlation between the different faunal provinces indicates that the second and third order cycles are again synchronous. A total of eight third order cycles are recognized in the Oxfordian and four in the Kimmeridgian. Sequence stratigraphical analysis yields a promising high resolution correlation between Switzerland and t e United Kingdom and shows that the mechanism controlling the third order cycles is high frequency and at least regional in extent.
