Abstract: Hydrocarbon Potential in the Cordilleran Thrust Belt and Adjacent Areas in Northeastern Utah

Thomas C. Chidsey Jr., Roger L. Bon

Over 153 million bbls of oil and 595 BCF of gas have been produced from fields in the Cordilleran thrust belt and southern Green River basin of

northeastern Utah. However, these regions still contain large, promising areas that are virtually unexplored. Potential prospects are within the economic and technical capabilities of both major and independent operators. These potential prospects are structurally and stratigraphically analogous to producing fields in the region.

Various targets for future exploratory efforts in the Utah thrust belt and Green River basin include:

1. combination structural and stratigraphic traps in fluvial sandstones of the Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone and Frontier Formation along the southwestern continuation of the Moxa arch;

2. Mesozoic reservoir rocks in simple, basement-involved (?) fault-propagation anticlines underlying the Hogsback thrust;

3. anticlines of Paleozoic and Mesozoic reservoir rocks beneath the North Flank fault of the Uinta Mountains within or below the Hogsback thrust plate;

4. true duplexes with horses of Paleozoic and Mesozoic reservoir rocks in both the Absaroka and Hogsback thrust plates;

5. fault-propagation anticlines involving Cretaceous reservoir rocks east of the Nugget truncation in the shallow Absaroka thrust plate;

6. anticlines developed between imbricate thrust systems above salt beds of the Jurassic Preuss Formation in the shallow Absaroka thrust plate. Potential reservoir rocks include the Jurassic Stump and Cretaceous Kelvin Formations;

7. broad, subtle folds composed of Paleozoic reservoir rocks west of the ramp anticline trend on the Absaroka thrust plate.
