ABSTRACT: A New Regional Appraisal of the Coal Resources of the Henry Mountains Coal Field, Emery, Wayne, and Garfield Counties, Utah

Data were compiled at a 1:100,000 scale for a new, regional, resource assessment of the two major Upper Cretaceous coal zones the Henry Mountains coal field. These two coal zones are in the Ferron Sandstone and Muley Canyon Sandstone members of the Mancos Shale.

The more widespread Ferron Sandstone coal zone covers a 50-ft-thick interval near the top of the member, and consists of one to four coal benches. The coal has an aggregate mapped thickness ranging from 2 to 16.5 ft; however, except in three limited areas, none of the individual coal benches exceeds 4 ft thick. Coal resources for areas where the aggregate Ferron zone coal is greater than 2 ft thick are 742 million short tons.

The stratigraphically higher Muley Canyon Sandstone coal zone is limited mainly to the Garfield County part of the field, where it is the thicker, more persistent coal zone. It covers a 150-ft-interval within the Muley Canyon (formerly Emery) Sandstone Member, and consists of one to eight coal benches. The coal has an aggregate mapped thickness ranging from 2 to 20.4 ft. Most of the area underlain by this zone has at least 5 ft of coal, and about one-half the area has 10 ft or more of coal. Coal resources for areas where the aggregate coal in the Muley Canyon zone is greater than 2 ft thick are 1406 million short tons.
