ABSTRACT: Establishing Sand/Shale Reflectivity: A Prerequisite for Seismic Exploration

As exploration geophysicists, we have made significant progress in the recognition of reflection patterns as indicators of geological processes (reference Memoir 26 AAPG). By applying principles of seismic stratigraphy, reservoir and source rocks can be predicted more accurately beyond the limits of well control. It becomes that much more important, therefore, to identify the lithologies which create these reflection patterns. The objective of this paper is to identify and define seismic acoustic properties and trends of sands and shales. We shall use the excellent data base available in the Gulf Basin to develop an approach for establishing key rock properties from seismic and well data for sand/shale sequences which have direct application in both an exploration and production conte t.
