Drilling activity in the Canning basin will be restricted to five wildcats and two appraisal wells in the 24 months through December 1991. All exploration efforts in EP114, EP142, and EP175 will have concentrated on a single high-risk play-type on the Broome Platform. This effort will culminate in the drilling of two wildcats (Whistler 1 and Sunshine 1) near the juncture of these three permits in late 1991.

These wildcats will drill two of several mapped Permian-Carboniferous Grant Group glaciogene structural-stratigraphic traps situated in proximity to the truncated edge of a Silurian-Devonian regional seal (the evaporite-bearing Carribuddy Group). The Carribuddy regional seal serves to concentrate petroleum migrated from the hydrogen-rich marine source facies of the Lower Ordovician that underlie the Carribuddy. Hence, these particular glacial retreat-related mound-forms have an enhanced chance for oil charge.

This play-type has a favorable juxtaposition of a marine Ordovician oil source unconformably overlain by Permian-Carboniferous quartz arenite reservoirs along a 150+ km trend. Adequate seals are perceived to be the least predictable aspect along this trend. The estimated unrisked potential for each of these Permian-Carboniferous glaciogene strat-traps ranges from a few to 30+ million bbl recoverable oil reserves.

The glacial retreat stratigraphic model for trap development and the oil charge scenario will be demonstrated with wireline log motifs, seismic displays, cross sections and maps. The actual vs. prognosed results of drilling Whistler 1 and Sunshine 1 will also be discussed.
