ABSTRACT: Computer-Related Standards for the Petroleum Industry: Progress and Trends

WINCZEWSKI, LARAMIE M., Simon Petroleum Technology, Houston, TX

Rapid application of the computer to all areas of the petroleum industry is straining the capabilities of corporations and vendors to efficiently integrate computer tools into the work environment.

Barriers to this integration arose from decades of competitive development of proprietary applications formats, along with compilation of databases in isolation. Rapidly emerging industry-wide standards relating to computer applications and data management are poised to topple these barriers.

Anticipated benefits of these standards include faster access to data, better integrity of data content, more intuitive interfaces to applications, less staff training, and rapid development and evolution of complex computer-assisted functionality.

This presentation identifies the most active players within a rapidly evolving group of cooperative standardization activities sponsored by the petroleum industry. Summarized are their objectives, achievements, current activities, and relationships to each other. The trends of these activities are assessed and projected.
