ABSTRACT: Offshore Exploration, East Coast Environment of Canada

TSUI, P. T. P., K. J. DRUMMOND, and A. J. JENIK,* Mobile Oil Canada, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Mobil Oil Canada has been active on the east coast of Canada for the past 30 years. We have participated in the drilling of some 80 wells and acquired over 90,000 km of seismic. Presently, Mobil and partners are proceeding ahead with the development of the Hibernia oil field, offshore Newfoundland.

During the exploratory phase, we have been challenged by the east coast environment, having to cope with severe climate, ice floes, and icebergs. At the same time, we have been cognizant of environmental protection of the area's fishing grounds and sea birds and have responded by having appropriate environmental management programs in place, including alert-emergency and oil spill response plans. Moreover, we have worked with local communities and governments in order to minimize any potential negative socioeconomic impacts from our exploration activities.

The following four examples will serve to illustrate our commitment to protecting the east coast environment: (1) ice and iceberg management on the grand banks; (2) the effects of marine seismic surveys using linear chemical explosives on fish, seabirds, and marine mammals around Sable Island; (3) drilling through overpressured formations, Scotian shelf; (4) West Newfoundland Marine Seismic Program, working with local residents.
