ABSTRACT: Pitfalls in Seismic Modeling of Stratigraphic Traps

EDWARDS, KEITH, Sandlapper Support Services, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

As oil and gas reservoirs become harder to find, the interpretation of seismic data has shifted from analysis of time structures to analysis of subtle amplitude and character changes. Seismic modeling of such anomalies is an integral part of the interpretation process. It is important to realize that the subtle changes seen on real seismic data may not always be due to a geological change. This poster session will show examples of how phase changes along a seismic line can produce similar anomalies to those produced by a geologic change. An attempt will be made to show how to recognize a phase change.

At the time of writing this abstract, permission to use real data examples has not been obtained. If it is not possible to use real data, model data will be used exclusively.
