ABSTRACT: Brent Group Reservoir Heterogeneity: A Case Study using the Etive Formation Reservoir within the Murchison Field, Northern North Sea (U.K.)

A selection of reservoir sequences from the Murchison field (middle Jurassic, North Viking Graben) was chosen to study the nature of permeability variation within the Brent Group, with particular emphasis on the Etive Formation, which forms one of the main reservoir horizons within the field.

Reservoir heterogeneities within the Etive Formation have been evaluated using data from wireline logs, routine core examination, conventional core plug permeability studies, and minipermeameter data. A fivefold hierarchy of permeability heterogeneity has been identified related to the presence of primary sedimentological features (orders 1 to 4) and include formation, facies transitions, bedding surfaces, and laminations. Permeability heterogeneities produced by post-depositional diagenetic/tectonic processes result in the development of fifth-order heterogeneities.

Examination of wireline logs and core reveals the presence of potential permeability barriers that could cause compartmentalization of the Etive reservoir; these include permeability heterogeneities associated with (1) transitions between the two major facies associations present within the Etive Formation, tidal channel and beach/foreshore sandstones; and (2) the development of fine-grained inactive tidal channel fill sandstones and siltstones.

A detailed sedimentological model has been developed that demonstrates the complexity of reservoir zonation in the Etive Formation of the Murchison field.
