Demonstration of Project File Concept for Interfacing Well-Log Applications to Various Needs of Petroleum Geologists

Paul E. Belanger, Brian O. Richardson

Amoco's Bfile project file shares data between different programs, whether developed in-house or by vendors. This poster session demonstrates the use of the project file in well-log application programs used by explorationists. In-house software has direct access to the project file, but vendor products need to have the data "bridged" to the necessary format. As geologists and analysts continue choosing a variety of vendor products that meet their needs, the petroleum industry must shift more of its programming resources to bridging company data and vendor products.

Whereas vendor software requires each company to bridge its proprietary data to all vendor products it uses, data reformatting is less expensive than developing and maintaining complex application programs. The petroleum industry and software vendors both would benefit from a standardized project file that would integrate and use various vendor and in-house products or transfer data between partners.

Structured query language (SQL) is becoming the standard relational data-base management system (DBMS) and should probably form the DBMS for the proposed project file; the project file needs to be device independent. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) SQL committee needs to propose a standardized vector storage format to make SQL a more complete DBMS. Without standardization, integration of various products is more difficult, shortcomings in interpretation are great, and vendor products are less worthwhile to purchase.

The petroleum industry needs to define, simplify, and standardize approaches in transferring data to and from vendor products.
