Abstract: Correlation of Major Unconformities in Western Indonesia

Many new geologic and geophysical data have been accumulated as a result of extensive activity in oil exploration in Western Indonesia, so that the regional framework now can be better understood and delineated. Several unconformities have been recognized in the stratigraphic sequences. The three major unconformities are the early Tertiary, middle Miocene, and Pliocene-Pleistocene. Of less importance is the late Oligocene unconformity which affected only west Sumatra, Java, and Borneo (Kalimantan). Correlation of these major stratigraphic breaks makes possible the determination of the geologic evolution of each sedimentary basin in the region during Tertiary time, so that oil and gas accumulations can be better interpreted.
