Abstract: Abstract: Megaexploration for New Petroleum Basins--Application of Old Ideas on Expanded Scale in Southern Rocky Mountain Basins

Bruce A. Black

New exploration techniques and old tried and true concepts are providing a basis for minimizing risk and maximizing exploration of potential new hydrocarbon-bearing basins in the southern Rocky Mountains. Essential in these efforts is the ability to recognize potential source rocks and a favorable maturity history. Such factors as the lack of well control, thick Tertiary sediment or volcanic cover, unfavorable land positions, unknown reservoir quality, etc., have not seriously limited the exploration effort.
