Abstract: Practicality of Computer Geology in Small Company

T. D. Runnels

Exploration geochemistry, seismic modeling, environmental stratigraphy, and plate tectonics represent spearheads of petroleum exploration. This advanced technology in general is not feasible unless supported by computerized methodology. Short-fused projects and increasing costs for trained personnel place additional emphasis on the desirability of electronic data-processing support in nearly every magnitude of geologic venture. Hardware (the computer), software (the programs), and data are becoming widely available via commercial vendors. With these tools outside of the traditional stronghold of major petroleum companies, smaller organizations now have the opportunity to augment their professional staff for a fraction of the cost once required.
