Abstract: Yarnell Trend, Sumner County, Kansas

William V. Knight

The Yarnell trend in T32S, R4W, Sumner County, Kansas, produces oil or gas from five different formations. Hydrocarbon accumulation is controlled by both structure and stratigraphy and has been affected strongly by growth structures and paleotopography. Evidence suggests that at least one reservoir was cut by postaccumulation faulting, permitting the escape of a possibly significant part of the original oil in place. This leads to speculation on the ultimate fate of the escaped oil and whether it may be trapped in some other reservoir today.

A series of maps traces the development of the Yarnell trend structure and stratigraphy from Ordovician Simpson through Mississippian and Pennsylvanian to modern times.
