Use and Abuse of Wireline Measurements for Potash Exploration and Reserves Estimates

Abstract

A technical dispute between a mining company and oil and gas producers in SE New Mexico opened the door to a world of technical and political intrigue. What started out as an exercise involving evaluation of an over-reaching wireline evaluation by partially informed individuals morphed into an Alice-in-Wonderland fantasy world of IPO promotions, misleading requests to outside consultants, and litigation, as well as Congressional and government agency lobbying. The resulting case history should serve as a cautionary tale for all petrophysicists, whether they are working as outside consultants or on an internal evaluation team. The pressures can be the same, in both cases.
