Applications of XRD data in horizontal drilling: the value of knowing shale mineralogy
Abstract
Wellsite XRD can be an excellent tool to identify certain shale mineralogy as potential target zones within horizontal wells. Shales in the Mancos / Niobrara Equivalent show a corresponding relationship between calcite percentages and speed of drilling. Changes in mineralogy also correspond to changes in fluid geochemistry. On site XRD can help to identify zones of varying mineralogy not easily apparent in MWD gamma data, aiding geosteering and zone correlation. XRD data can identify clay type within shales that may cause problems relating to drilling efficiency.
