Innovative And Cheaper Drilling And Flow Enhancement Technologies
Abstract
Over the last decade, we have witnessed a radical change in the competitiveness of renewable energies and a vast growth in solar PV and wind for power production. Geothermal energy has been, and still can be, a competitive alternative but has not had the same growth. De-risking the geothermal resources and reducing development costs is a critical success factor for maintaining and preferable increasing competitiveness for geothermal energy. The capex break-down for typical geothermal developments shows clearly how drilling and well completion is a significant part of the overall cost; a fact that has led to several R&D initiatives to address this and to see how the geothermal industry can benefit from experiences and technologies in oil and gas. This talk on drilling and flow enhancement challenges will address several areas where O&G synergies could and should be exploited to strengthen the geothermal industry; areas like operational efficiency, drilling and completion technologies, directional drilling, stimulation, logging and instrumentation, etc. Experiences gained while drilling of IDDP-2 will be used to exemplify but also experiences from other projects will be presented.
