South Outeniqua Basin Structure: New Elements presented by Vincent Delhaye-Prat

Abstract

Recently acquired 2D seismic lines covering both the South Outeniqua and Mallory basins (offshore South Africa) allow illustrating the complex geometry of basins close to the Agulhas-Falklands Fracture Zone (AFFZ). Evolution of both basins and associated structures as Diaz Marginal Ridge is linked to the AFFZ movements, from its early emplacement ca 135Ma until the Natal mid-oceanic ridge leaves the area. Using a set of gravity and magnetics data covering the whole area offshore, we modelled the crustal structure along four regional profiles and try to reconciliate seismic observations and interpretations, regional knowledge, potential field methods in the geological context of South Atlantic opening.
