Unlocking exploration opportunities in active fore arc basin Southern Java Offshore : C-Prospect

Abstract

Southern Java Offshore is located in active fore arc basin in Southern Part of Indonesia. The basin is characterized by a series of extensional structures formed during the Cenozoic in the shallow shelf. A major disincentive for exploration in Southern Java fore arc has been a common perception of structural complexity. The other challenge is the petroleum system itself, especially for source rock, reservoir quality, time and hydrocarbon migration, and reservoir distribution. The fore arc has so far yielded no further exploration success. The first exploration wells were carried out in the 1970's are Alveolina-1 and Borelis-1 in Eastern of South Java Offshore, but the results are dry well. In 1984-1985, the exploration was resumed with drilling wells Cilacap-1 in the eastern part of Southern Java, Ujung Kulon-1 and Cipatulah-1 in the western part of Southern Java. All three of these wells also are yet to find commercial hydrocarbon reserves. However, after three decades, a new exploration well namely C-1 was drilled in early 2016. The exploration drilling's objective was to prove the hydrocarbon accumulation in Bayah Formation. The indication of hydrocarbon from the well presents promising outcome. It is expected that the future exploration in Southern fore arc basin will be successful. The study aims to investigate the lesson learnt from the previous wells and to what extent of result from the C-1 could be expected that the future exploration in fore arc basin Southern java will succeed.
