Regional Previous HitinterpretationNext Hit Across the Entire Gulf of Mexico Basin — A New Perspective

Abstract

Abstract

Previous HitInterpretationNext Hit of regional 2D seismic data from the US onshore, offshore and Mexico offshore is the framework for an integrated margin-to-margin basin evaluation. This integrated seismic program is the only basin-wide regional data set acquired for the purpose of imaging and mapping the entire basin from margin-to-margin. These data provide unique coverage of the entire Gulf of Mexico Basin from margins to the basin showing the deeper Mesozoic strata, the underlying basement and, in particular, the pre-salt strata in offshore Mexico. Stratal horizons mapped from well control in US and Mexico are extended into Mexican waters, providing an internally consistent stratigraphic correlation of known reservoir intervals into frontier areas. The Previous HitinterpretationNext Hit provides a comprehensive analysis and mapping of Tertiary and Mesozoic depositional systems. Analysis of the seismic character southward to the Bay of Campeche and isopach maps of the entire basin depositional systems through time provide the framework for calibrating maturation modelling and prediction of migration fairways across the GoM and the location of depositional systems through time. Combining these new data where basement is well imaged with gravity and magnetic data make it possible to constrain the position of the continent-ocean transitions in several areas, including the Yucatan rifted margin and the East Mexican transform margin. Seeing the entire basin structure and stratigraphy reduces Previous HitinterpretationNext Hit pitfalls, adds critical analogs from over the entire basin, and advances planning for exploration further into the future. The Previous HitinterpretationTop and depth migrated data create a calibrated set of regional stratigraphic correlations, 3D regional velocity cube and the framework for integration and analysis of other seismic data from the GoM. A number of lines and maps from the regional analysis are presented to highlight some of the depositional and structure features that are observed from this basin-wide perspective.
