Abstract

The Arab-D and Hanifa reservoirs constitute the main producing intervals in the Khurais area. Understanding the sequence stratigraphy of these reservoirs in the context of the evolution of the Arabian platform during the Jurassic is essential to address current challenges in the characterization, correlation and the geometric relationships among their flow and baffle units. This study conducted a sequence stratigraphic analysis of the Arab-D and Hanifa reservoirs, tying them across the Jubaila Formation via integrating core, outcrop, micropaleontologic and seismic data. The study classified the three units into different lithofacies, constructed new depositional models and configured a comprehensive sequence stratigraphic framework. Study results conclude that a significant portion of the Hanifa stratigraphy is locally removed by erosion, which explains anomalies in numeric modeling; and also provides substantial implications for the regional understanding of the Arabian Jurassic platform architecture.
