Stratigraphic Trap Potential in Deep Water Depositional Systems–Pelotas Basin, Offshore Uruguay

David Lackenby
Exploration Geoscientist, BP Uruguay Exploration

Abstract

Offshore Uruguay came into the focus of oil majors and independents with 2012's highly successful Uruguay Ronda II. BP was successful in acquiring 3 blocks in this round with the identification of various play types along the Uruguayan margin. One of these plays involves a Cretaceous deep water depositional system with potential for sand pinch-outs along the slope and basin floor. A similar type play has enjoyed much success in the Equatorial Atlantic Margin. This talk will address the key tectono-stratigraphic drivers of the play, including deep crustal controls, hinterland tectonics, sediment input points and stratigraphic architecture.
