Abstract

Oil and gas bottom hole temperature data were used to calculated heat flow and subsurface temperatures in West Previous HitVirginiaTop. An area of elevated surface heat flow was found in the eastern portion on the state. In order to explore potential causes for this anomaly a 2D model of the basin was created using available lithologic and structural data. The model was designed to test whether variations in crustal properties, fluid advection, or magmatic activity could account for the observed temperatures in the basin. Properties tested include: sediment and basement heat production, thermal conductivity, and basal heat flow. The linear Q-A relation-ship between heat flow (Q) and crustal heat production (A) was used to determine heat flow at the base of the model. The results can be used to place bounds on where hydrocarbons may still exist as well as provide data for potential future geothermal heat uses.
